One of these magnificent little hawks caught a sparrow in my backyard a couple of weeks ago, regrettably I only have a few distorted pictures taken through a double paned window.

The hawk has only been successful once that I know of. We try to stagger the times when we feed the birds, and we keep the seed and peanuts close to our fence and patio where the hawks have no chance of swooping down. I know they have to eat, but I don't want to see them eat "my" songbirds or small rodents. They are magnificent to see, though!

Fantastic! I've noticed a lot more of these around lately. I am guessing they hunt more in the fall? I dunno.

Maybe they're not hidden in the foliage. They have to hunt year round to survive.

True lol I really meant it like you said it... They are more hidden until the fall where all the leaves are gone and you can see them out in the open more. I saw a pair on the telephone lines the other day. I stopped and got a couple shots of one and then they took off!
